Experiencing Eurythmy

A course in speech eurythmy would lead you into an exploration of the sounds and elements of language. Before beginning this path of discovery, the class would open with movement exercises that help you attune to space, those around you and your own movements. Once a sense of movement awareness has been established, depending on the theme of the class, one might "get to know" the unique forms alive in the vowels, consonants or the structural elements of language.

Looking more closely at the sounds in speech, we spontaneously express our inner reactions to life through the vowels. "Ah..." "Oh!" "Hey!" These exclamations hold a wealth of meaning. "Ah..." - we give ourselves up to the wonder of the moment. "Oh, I see." The "Oh" - encompasses something. "Hey!" - You want to put up a barrier or stop something. In the vowel gestures these inner experiences come to full, visible expression.

The consonants give us quite a different experience. In the sound, "B", you have words like baby, bowl and balloon. Enclosing, protecting, or making a space for something, lives in the essence of this sound. Each consonant expresses a different quality about the form and nature of the world.

A speech eurythmy class would explore these elements of language through their expression in poetry, dramatic texts or stories. In a tone eurythmy class you would discover the gestures and expressive movements living in music.

Because eurythmy is based on movements natural to the human being, everyone is able to do them, whether it is for spiritual development, refreshment or therapeutic purposes.
